The Gary Piripavel Memorial League at Steel City includes Owen Darby, Brent Tishuk, Lee Sandt and so many other area greats. If there was a challenge to Andrew Armellino’s house-record 867, it’d likely come from one of those individuals, right?
Well, there was a house record registered this past Tuesday, but it wasn’t from the aforementioned standouts. Instead, it came off the left hand of Jonathan Bermudez. He posted the first 34 before a messenger fell just short of the 7-pin for a huge 889.
“To be honest, I still haven’t come down from it yet,” said the 27-year-old Allentown resident. “I’ve been rolling the ball really well over the past five or six weeks, and I’ve had chances at 300 and 800.”
Bermudez said it’s always a good feeling to shoot 300 and that was the case in Game 1. The nerves still kicked in, and he was put to the test as the second game sailed along.
“I wasn’t paying attention. I was just talking with teammates. I got more nervous after I had the first seven or eight,” he said. “I kept my routine the same, but I haven’t done back-to-back before.”
Bermudez chased back-to-back right through his final shot. His Brunswick Crown 78U cut through the 1-2 pocket resulting in 300-300.
“It was surreal, but I used the same approach in the third game,” he said. “The first frame was 10 back and thought it was time to go. At one point, I was sitting and I looked up and I already had 810. I kept my head down and didn’t want to turn around, because we were one of the last ones left.”
Suddenly, phones around the area – including mine – started blowing up. Cameras caught Bermudez dropping his 33rd straight strike. Now, it was time to sit and wait for his mates to all bowl their 10th frame.
“I got up in the 10th and told myself to get one more,” Bermudez recalled. “It was a good shot, but I tripped out a late 7-pin. I calmed down, set myself and the next one was inside a hair and the ball just didn’t make the corner.’’
The headpin ricochet off the right kick panel and torpedo its way across the pin deck stopping shy of the 7-pin. The streak was over at 34. He converted the spare for the house record.
“I looked up and saw all of the people cheering me on,” Bermudez said. “I don’t think anyone left, because it was something they might never see again. I look back on it, and I’d love to have one more chance at that 11th one. But it’s incredible for me to believe I have the house record.”
The 889 is Bermudez’s third 800 and wipes out an earlier 823. The pair of treys ups his 300 total to nine, and his average has jumped to 222.
The chase is over
The first game of Chase Leckner’s match last Saturday at Steel City was a case of feast or famine. The 18-year-old North Penn High School senior’s 217 included nine strikes and three splits.
But the lefty quickly turned things around and erased three previous 299s with a perfect game.
“The three splits were pocket splits, so they were all in the pocket,” said the Lansdale resident. “I just stayed put and carried them all.”
Leckner said it became real following the eighth frame. His Storm IQ Tour Ruby cut a bit high, but a helicopter pin dropped a pair of sticks. He felt luck was going his way.
But his experience taught him to keep an even keel as he entered the 10th. There, it was time to finish the mission.
“I definitely had no nerves. The first one was all 10 back,” he said. “The 11th, I got it a bit inside, but I carried. That was the worst ball of the game, for sure.”
So, how did his final ball look when it left his hand? As Leckner put it, “I knew it when I let it go. I saw it turn at the arrows and because the ball is strong on the back end, I wasn’t going to leave a 7-pin.’’
It provided a sigh of relief to check the box next to 300. He collected a few more strikes to open the third game. The string of 18 straight strikes ended, and he finished with 228-745.
Leckner has seen an uptick in his averages. He’s sailing along in the low 230s at Steel City as well as in the mid-220s in the Lehigh Valley Traveling League. He credits his success to bowling and practicing five days a week, perfecting a new release based on the tutelage of Krista Sandt.
