The sheets also scored highly for breathability, with another saying: “They stayed cool but not too cold”.

In the lab, the bedding performed exceptionally; it washed well, and fitted our test bed perfectly, which means you’ll be able to replicate that inviting, five-star hotel finish at home. You may just need the help of your iron. But given their near-flawless performance both at home and in the lab, we’d say it’s a trade worth making.

Dunelm Dorma Egyptian Cotton 400 Thread Count Percale Duvet Cover

Score: 95/100

If you like the sound of the sheets above but your budget won’t quite stretch that far, then this Dunelm set has the same thread count and a crisp percale weave. Our testers described the bedding as “super soft”, and “cosy”, noting that it adjusted quickly to their body temperatures.

Our experts were impressed with how well it washed, maintaining its shape and colour vibrancy. Making the bed was dreamy, too. Again, it will need an iron if you want a crease-free finish (all the sets we tested do).

John Lewis Soft & Silky 400 Thread Count Egyptian Cotton Duvet Cover

Score: 93/100

Butter-soft and breathable, this bedding offers an instant upgrade to your sleep set-up, without breaking the bank. With a 400 thread count rating and silky sateen weave, it feels cool and comfortable against the skin (a real bonus during sunnier spells), and fits true to size. It also maintained its shape and softness well after multiple washes, though some testers noted minor fading after a second wash.

It also has a satin weave finish, which means it’s shinier and silkier than the products above. Our panel declared it soft and “luxurious to touch”, praising the “elegant” design – one person said they wouldn’t use any other bedding from now on. The fit was outstanding, slipping onto our beds effortlessly, and it performed well in the wash.

As is the curse of cotton, it will need a once-over with the iron to remove creases, but that’s by no means a dealbreaker for affordable bedding that ticks so many boxes.

M&S 230 Count Egyptian Cotton Duvet Cover

Score: 92/100

Soft, breathable and well-made, from its fit to fasteners, this budget-friendly bedding by M&S immediately impressed our panel. It scored particularly well for its effective temperature regulation, keeping sleepers “just right” all night.

Overall, the cover washed well with no shrinkage or piling; however, several testers reported significant colour fading after multiple washes, which is something to consider if you’re opting for a vibrant hue. You’ll also need to whip out the iron for crisp, crease-free sheets after drying.

Despite this, the duvet cover impressed where it matters most: comfort, quality and ease of cleaning. So much so, that 100% of our panel said they’d buy it again and recommend it to others.

Hampton & Astley Egyptian Cotton 500 Thread Count Sateen Luxury

Score: 92/100

This bedding boasts the highest thread count of all the ones we tested, something our testers noticed and loved, saying it resulted in an “almost silky texture”, which felt premium. It was soft against the skin, and comfortable – just what you want for your beauty sleep!

The luxe set emerged from our washing machines at the GHI just as soft as before and held its shape and colour well. There were no complaints about its fit or design either. Everyone said they’d recommend it to friends and family.

Homescapes Organic 400 TC Egyptian Cotton Sateen Duvet Cover Set

Score: 89/100

Another 400 thread count set with a smooth sateen finish, this Homescapes set scored highly for comfort and breathability. Several testers praised the silky feel, with one describing it as “luxurious to touch” while others raved about how cosy yet cool it was to snuggle up with overnight. “It even helped with my menopausal night sweats,” commented one panellist.

Everyone appreciated the secure fit too – the fitted sheet worked well, even on deeper mattresses, and it held its shape and softness after washing. As with most cotton bedding, there was some creasing after washing and a few noted that the smooth finish may slip around on the bed. Still, when you consider the secure fit, breathable fabric and thoughtful details like a reusable cotton storage bags, it’s a worthwhile addition to your bedroom.

How we test Egyptian cotton bedding

To find the best Egyptian cotton bedding sets, we test a duvet cover, pillowcase and sheet from each collection. The sets are sent out to our reader panel (we enlisted over 100 people), who sleep with them for up to a month. They then report back in detail on the bedding’s softness, comfort, breathability and design, including what it’s like to make the bed with, how comfy it is to snuggle up with (no one wants scratchy sheets), and if it washes well.

Back in the Good Housekeeping Institute lab, our experts take a duvet cover from each set and carry out multiple wash tests. What is the difference between Egyptian cotton and cotton?

It really is all down to the fibre length. Standard cotton is still a great pick for bedding. But if your budget extends to Egyptian cotton, then you’ll be investing in a longer lasting and even softer set.

Both Egyptian cotton and cotton generally come in two different weaves: percale, which is slightly looser, making it crisper and more breathable; and sateen, which is tighter and therefore glossier and silkier. Both are soft and smooth against your skin – so it all comes down to personal preference.

What is the best thread count for Egyptian cotton?

Let’s first define thread count. This number refers to how many threads there are in a square inch of the fabric. The higher the number, the more tightly woven the material is.

You’d assume that a higher count is better, but that’s not always true. Linen bedding, for example, has a typical thread count of around 200, but that’s what makes it so breathable and gives it that soft texture.

So the right thread count for you will depend on your particular tastes; if you’re looking for an indulgent hotel feel, go for a higher number.
