Late Replacement Narredu Guides 20/1 Shot in The Marquee Event
MUMBAI: It was a chance ride for India’s best rider Suraj Narredu and the wily saddle artist made the most of it by guiding Alluring Silver, a 20/1 shot, to an astounding victory in the Zavaray S Poonawalla Indian Turf Invitation Cup (Grade 1), feature of an historic day in Indian racing when five Grade 1 races were run on a single day at the Mahalaxmi racecourse on Sunday.
English rider David Egan was assigned to ride the Pesi Shrofftrained filly but just before catching his flight from England to India on Friday evening, he was told that he cannot travel as one of his contacts had tested positive for Covid-19. Suraj was asked to guide Alluring Silver at the last minute as the Bangalore boy had no ride in that race.
“It is difficult to watch such a big race from the stands. But as luck would have it, I found myself in the thick of action and here I am with such a grand success,” Suraj told TOI. Suraj also won Sprinters’ Cup astride favourite Multifaceted.
Alluring Silver was always considered a classic material but never managed to deliver having finished close on a few occasions including a third place in Indian Derby earlier this year in March.
The daughter of Irish father Leitir Mor out of Personal Allure (USA), finally ran to her calibre and managed to stave off a late challenge from public choice Juliette. Juliette was way behind the seven-horse field till turning for home and, though she came up with giant strides towards close, she just failed to catch the front running winner.
Unbeaten Miracle again proved she is the best filly of the current crop when she registered her seventh win on the trot to claim the 1000 Guineas. While Super Mile was won by Cosmic Ray, My Opinion won the Stayers’ Cup. Suraj was the most successful professional with three wins under his belt. Shroff was the only trainer with a double.
