Good News: Beacon Center fundraiser with Scooter’s Coffee and quarterly recap | Local News

{KXLG -Watertown, SD} To begin the new year, we look at the Beacon Center after releasing its quarterly report for October to December 2023. In October and November alone, 56 individuals were provided emergency shelter, 753 survivors of abuse have been provided service, and 929 total days were spent in the shelter among all clients combined.

Beacon Center reports that the eight fully functioning apartments on location became full numerous times, and over the weekend of December 23rd, 17 individuals were staying in the emergency shelter. Victims currently occupy seven apartments and are close to finalizing living arrangements with the Beacon Center’s intensive case manager.

The sell-a-thon on KXLG raised over $20,000, double the initial goal, thanks to matching donors  First Premier Bank, Smoke Solutions, Plains Commerce Bank, Dakotaland Federal Credit Union, and Dacotah Bank in November was recapped.

Most recently, another fundraiser partnership with Scooter’s Coffee’s Ultimate Day of Giving in Watertown raised $2,840 after 50% of the day’s sales went to the Beacon Center.

A new rural outreach coordinator, Shona Marshall, was introduced in December. Marshall said, “As the Rural Outreach Coordinator, I will be shedding light on the reality of abuse and trauma within our community through Education, Outreach, and Awareness programs. I will be going into the community to bring awareness about the purpose of our organization and to provide education about domestic and sexual violence. In addition to that, I will be providing Life Skills Training to our clients. Life Skills Training provides survivors of abuse with the resources and confidence in skills they need to positively improve their overall well-being.”
