No major impact of Microsoft outage on Indian equity, commodity markets, say exchanges

Notwithstanding a global outage of Microsoft Systems, exchanges and clearing corporations in India functioned without any major impact, a joint media release by exchanges said on Saturday. Out of over 1,400 trading members’ ecosystem, there were only 11 trading members who reported disruptions to their operations, the release said.”Overall, exchanges & clearing corporations have not witnessed any significant impact to the trading and clearing activities in the Indian securities market,” the release said, adding that the issues with the affected members were either resolved during the day, or are being resolved.

On July 19, 2024, there was a global outage of Microsoft Systems. This outage has been reported to have caused disruptions across various sectors globally.


National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) is the world’s largest derivatives exchange by trading volume (contracts) as per the statistics maintained by Futures Industry Association (FIA) for calendar year 2023. It is ranked third in the world in the equity segment by number of trades (electronic order book) in 2023, as per the statistics maintained by World Federation of Exchanges (WFE).

Meanwhile, National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange Limited (NCDEX) is the multi commodity exchange covering the agricultural sector. It is India’s largest agricultural derivatives exchange.

Meanwhile, Metropolitan Stock Exchange of India Limited (MSE) is the youngest exchange of the country which provides an electronic trading platform to trade in various products including currency derivatives. The Exchange has close to 2000 companies available for trading in its Equity Segment.

The US tech giant experienced a significant outage, affecting its services for users across many countries including India, the US, Japan, and Australia.

Later, Microsoft came out with a statement saying that the underlying cause has been fixed for Microsoft 365 Apps, Services.
