Cookies and Cocoa planned Tuesday

GODFREY — Here’s another opportunity to donate to Community Christmas and get cookies and hot cocoa.

The 12th Cookies and Cocoa for Community Christmas is 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7, at Freer Auto Body, 4512 N. Alby St., in Godfrey.

The United Way’s Community Christmas fundraiser event has been held every year since 2008, except last year because of the pandemic.

The business raised nearly $52,000 this summer at Christmas in July, founded by the Taylor Freer, 18, and Lily Freer, 15, the granddaughters of Freer Auto Body co-owner Margaret Freer.

“In July, due to the generosity of the community, when we closed that Friday we raised ‘almost’ $50,000 and a sweet couple from Glen Carbon sent a sweet note to Taylor and Lily and said they did not like ‘almost,’ so they gave Taylor and Lily a check to put them over $50,000,” Margaret Freer said.

Donations have kept coming in, but it’s slower than past years, she said.

“It has been a tough year,” she said. “We knew the need was still there, so decided to do Cookies and Cocoa for Community Christmas, even though we didn’t do it last year due to COVID.

“People can drop their new toys, coats, hygiene items or gift cards until Wednesday morning, Dec. 8,” she said. “We still count our blessings and appreciate all God and the community has done for us. Taylor and Lily want to make sure all children have a special Christmas.”
