The third annual Winter Garden Row Crop Conference, hosted by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service offices in Atascosa, Dimmit, Frio, Guadalupe, Medina, Uvalde, Wilson and Zavala counties, is scheduled for Jan. 26 in Hondo.

Check-in begins at 8:15 a.m., and the program will follow from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hermann Sons Life Hall, 251 Texas Highway 173.

Registration is $25 per person, which includes lunch. To RSVP, contact the AgriLife Extension office in Medina County at 830-741-6180. The deadline to RSVP is Jan. 23. 

The conference will offer practical tips and expert advice on corn, cotton and sorghum.  

Conference agenda

Three Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units will be available — one general, one integrated pest management and one laws and regulations.

The conference also includes a trade show, which will open at 8:15 a.m.

Topics and speakers include:

  • Applicator laws and regulations, Vick Alexander, assistant regional director-pesticides, Texas Department of Agriculture.
  • Handling challenging weeds, Reagan Noland, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension agronomist and assistant professor, Texas A&M Department of Soil and Crop Sciences, San Angelo.
  • Mexican corn leafhopper and cotton jassid, David Kerns, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension entomologist and associate department head, Department of Entomology, Bryan-College Station.
  • Crop market update and outlook, Mark Welch, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension economist-grain marketing and professor, Department of Agricultural Economics, Bryan-College Station.
  • AgriLife Extension corn and sorghum variety trial results, Ronnie Schnell, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension state cropping systems specialist and professor, Department of Soil and Crop Sciences, Bryan-College Station.
