Consider the fiber: Prior to shopping, it’s important to know what you like and what to look for material-wise.

• Cotton is easily the most popular fabric in bedding, partly because it includes many different types of weaves and styles. Percale is an airy weave as far as other cotton fabrics that typically feels crisp and lightweight, while sateen is woven in a satin weave that has a lustrous, smooth feel and glossy sheen.
• Flannel sheets, on the other hand, are made of a thick, brushed fabric for added warmth, and jersey sheets are made of knit, T-shirt-like material for super-softness (and sometimes less durability).
• Linen is ideal for hot sleepers, or any sleepers on hot summer nights, because of its looser weave and hollow fiber structure, which allows for optimal breathability.
• Hemp is similar to linen, both have temperature-regulating benefits, but hemp is typically stronger. While hemp is not as soft as cotton, it does get softer with each wash and tends to soften faster than linen fabric.

Think of your budget: As with any big purchase, it’s important to keep your budget in mind when it comes to choosing your next set of sheets. We’ve offered plenty of options on the lower end of the price range and for less than $200. Keep in mind, though, that there are some more luxury picks that come at a higher cost and are totally worth the splurge.

Keep depth in mind: Depending on how tall your mattress is at home, you may require a deeper pocket in your sheets to prevent them from coming off your bed every night. Most styles offer a depth of up to 16”, but some on our list feature extra-deep pockets, as large as 22”.

Unfortunately, it’s not always crystal clear if a product is truly organic or not. Sheets that are “made with organic cotton” may not actually be organic sheets, because the fibers go through several manufacturing steps with the potential to use synthetic chemicals along the way. To make sure you’re buying organic sheets, look for certifications like the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), which has strict guidelines on things like the dyes and finishes throughout the production process.

To double-check that your sheets are actually organic, you can use the GOTS public database by searching for GOTS-certified brands. Keep in mind that some brands may carry products that are instead certified through the manufacturer, so if the brand isn’t in the database under the name on the tag, your sheets could still be certified.
