Suspect arrested, facing murder charges after man killed at family BBQ in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – UPDATE: Birmingham police have arrested a suspect on charges of murder after a man was shot at a family BBQ on Wednesday, March 13.

30-year-old James Burdette of Birmingham is charged with murder in the shooting death of Willie Carr.

Police say Burdette shot Carr then fled the scene and stole a food truck before driving to a gas station in Chilton County where he was arrested by Chilton County deputies.

Burdette is being held in the Jefferson County Jail with no bond.

ORIGINAL: The Birmingham Police Department is investigating a homicide after they say a man was shot at a family BBQ Wednesday evening.

Police were called to the 1100 block of Cotton Avenue around 7:45 p.m. to investigate reports that someone was shot.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services were called to the scene where they pronounced the victim, 56-year-old Willie Edward Carr, dead.

Authorities say their investigation shows Carr was at the family BBQ when a suspect got angry and shot the man. The suspect fled the scene and is not in custody. Police are searching the area for the suspect.

Police say this was a targeted incident and believe there is no danger to the community.

We’re told the other people at that family BBQ are cooperating with police.
