Delta Cotton Belles expands into Coahoma County

Delta Cotton Belles is excited to announce it has added Coahoma County to its service area and will soon begin offering mammograms to the community.

“Part of our mission is to be looking for ways to respond to the unmet needs of women and breast cancer patients in our area. When we learned of an opportunity to expand into Coahoma County, we jumped at the chance,” DCB president Missy Stephens said. “Right now, we are so excited to be able to provide our Pink Promise Program to Coahoma County residents. Hopefully, we will be able to offer the rest of our services soon.”

Pink Promise, Stephens explained, provides free mammograms for women who are working but do not have insurance or their policies do not cover mammograms. Since the program’s inception, DCB is proud to have provided more than 800 free mammograms in its service region in the Mississippi and Arkansas Deltas.

To date, DCB has partnered with the following facilities to provide mammograms for DCB clients through provider referral at Delta Health Systems – The Medical Center in Greenville, MS; Leland Medical Clinic in Leland, MS; Bolivar Medical Center in Cleveland, MS; South Sunflower County Hospital in Indianola, MS; Greenwood-Leflore Hospital in Greenwood, MS; and now, Delta Health – Northwest Regional in Clarksdale.

The extension into Coahoma County was made possible thanks to Delta Health Systems — The Medical Center, which recently took over operations of the area’s hospital, Delta Health-Northwest Regional.

“I am beyond thrilled to support bringing the services of the Delta Cotton Belles to the Coahoma County area. Our team at Delta Health-Northwest Regional is passionate about keeping our community healthy, and this is just one way that supports our mission. I know The Pink Promise program will serve our community well as we promote the early detection of breast cancer and support after a diagnosis,” said Janet Benzing, Chief Administrative Officer for Delta Health-Northwest Regional.

Now, thanks to Delta Health, Delta Cotton Belles clients in Coahoma County will now be able to utilize the hospital and radiology department for mammograms.

Aside from partnering with Delta Cotton Belles, the hospital and its Radiology Department are also dedicated to raising funds in support of the nonprofit.

“Each year, our Radiology Department has a raffle and sells handmade ribbons for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. When we were introduced to Delta Cotton Belles and their mission earlier this year, we knew we wanted our proceeds from this year’s raffle tickets and ribbons sales to go to this local organization making such a difference here in the Delta,” said Spring H. Bowlin, R.T.(R)(M), Director of Imaging Services at Delta Health-Northwest Regional. “One of their members, Kim Dowdy, spoke so passionately of DCB, how they came to be and how they were helping breast cancer survivors. Being able to donate to their cause was an honor for Delta Health-Northwest Regional. We look forward to fostering a partnership with Delta Cotton Belles.”

Delta Cotton Belles was established in 2007 after Greenville resident Beth McKnight was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer. Since then, the all-volunteer group of women have provided over 800 free mammograms, ancillary services and education to many women and men of the Delta.

The services reach eleven counties in the Delta, including Washington, Bolivar, Humphreys, Grenada, Carroll, Issaquena, Sharkey, Sunflower, Leflore and Coahoma counties in Mississippi and Chicot County in Arkansas.

Delta Cotton Belles office is located in the Community Counseling Center building, 250 S. Shelby Street, Greenville, MS 38701. For more information about Delta Cotton Belles, call 662-390-6009 or visit the website at deltacottonbelles.org.
