Whether one is a connoisseur or a casual drinker, wine is one of those delicacies that almost anyone can enjoy. Even though every bottle of wine is derived from fermented grape juice, there are so many factors that go into creating the incredible array of flavors, textures, and aromas of each bottle. Something as simple as soil quality or irrigation technique can make a world of difference in wine quality, which is why certain bottles can go for thousands of dollars, while others sell for much less.
One doesn’t have to know the ins and outs of wine production to appreciate the quality of a delectable bottle of wine. But understanding the process behind how a simple grape can produce such a rich, complex wine can lead to discovering exceptional wines from unexpected regions. For example, in the historic hills of Galilee and the rocky shores of Binyamin, vineyards are blending ancient winemaking tradition with modern techniques to produce some truly noteworthy wines.
Like other Mediterranean countries, Israel has the unique combination of climate, soil type, elevation, and temperature required to grow quality wine. While France and Italy have been the world’s leading providers of wine for ages, their neighbor is quickly emerging as one of the fastest-growing wine regions in the world.
Discover The Rich Wines Of IWPA Wineries
Leading the charge to bring their country’s wine to the rest of the world is the Israeli Wine Producers Association (IWPA), which represents over 40 wineries nationwide. IWPA wineries span from smaller boutique wineries to some of the leading producers of wine in the country. While their vineyards are spread across the country, in both high- and low-lying terrain, each winery uses innovative techniques to grow a mix of indigenous and classic varietals.

“Each winery shares a story of faith, hope, passion, and craftsmanship, creating exceptional wines for all palates,” says Josh Greenstein, VP of Marketing & Sales at IWPA. “Our mission is to inspire people to discover the wines of this beautiful country and offer an unmatched journey for wine lovers everywhere.”
Many IWPA wineries grow their grapes in vineyards that stretch back centuries, and even millennia. 1848 Winery, known for its handcrafted red blends and expressive varietals, takes its name from a winemaking tradition that dates all the way back to 1848. Psagot Winery, whose vineyards reflect the unique terroir of the Judean Hills, produces bold, structured wines that have earned global recognition.
While the country grows international varietals like Syrah, Grenache, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon, it’s also home to several indigenous varietals that carry their own distinct flavors. Marawi (aka Hamdani) is a white grape that produces crisp, mineral-forward wines, while Dabouki is an ancient white grape associated with floral aromatics and slight acidity. Argaman has a very different flavor profile, as the grape is known for producing wines with bold tannins and notes of blackberry, spice, and Mediterranean herbs. Each of these varietals is a unique expression of the country’s centuries-old terroir.
Where Centuries-Old Tradition Meets Modern Innovation
In addition to their unique varietals, these IWPA wineries have another thing in common: the use of drip irrigation. Beginning in these vineyards before spreading globally, this modern technique allows vintners to deliver slow, targeted watering directly to each plant’s root zone. Through a series of tubes and emitters, winemakers can even adjust water flow down to the individual vine.
This has enormous effects on both the environment and the quality of the wine. Not only does it boost water efficiency in a dry climate, but it also limits weeds and diseases that can come from overwatering. As for the bottle, the regulated water delivery enhances the wine’s phenolic content and sugar concentration, bringing out the best taste from every grape.
Wine connoisseurs can find much to enjoy from the rich reds, whites, and rosés produced by IWPA wineries. But even the most casual drinker can discover new flavors and textures when drinking a bottle of this rich, Mediterranean wine. IWPA selections are available in all 50 states, with bottles sold in shops and restaurants across the country.
