‘We can all learn from him’: Eli Gold on Nick Saban’s retirement

WE DO. NICK SABAN DONE. WE’RE GOING TO BRING ON ELI GOLD NOW. THE VOICE OF THE CRIMSON TIDE ELI RYAN HENNESSY SPORTS DIRECTOR HERE. GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU MY FRIEND. WHAT A DAY. FIRST OFF JUST YOUR REACTION ON THIS INCREDIBLE CAREER AND THIS BREAKING NEWS. THANKS, RYAN. IT’S GOOD TO BE WITH WITH YOU AND THE WHOLE CREW. UM, I’M HAPPY FOR THE COACH. UH, HE HAS EARNED RETIREMENT OR WHATEVER HE’S GOING TO BE DOING NOW. UH, I DON’T THINK HE’S GOING TO RETIRE PERSONALLY. UH, AS FAR AS THE COACH, I THINK HE’S GOING TO FIND ANOTHER JOB IN THE WORLD OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL SOMEWHERE OR OTHER. BUT, YOU KNOW, THE MAN HAS MEANT SO MUCH TO SO MANY PEOPLE. YOU JUST HEARD THOSE OR JUST READ THOSE TESTIMONIALS FROM THE PLAYERS. YOU KNOW, IF YOU HAD WORKED OR PLAYED FOR NICK SABAN AND DIDN’T LEARN SOMETHING FROM HIM, THEN IT’S YOUR FAULT, NOT HIS. THE THE MAN HAS TAUGHT SO MANY PEOPLE, SO MANY THINGS. I HAVE LEARNED A LOT FROM COACH SABAN AND I’M WITHIN A COUPLE THREE YEARS OF HIS AGE. UH, YOU KNOW, WE CAN ALL LEARN FROM HIM AND THE MAN FORGETTING HIS X’S AND O’S, WHICH, YOU KNOW, IS BEYOND REPROACH. THE MAN KNOWS HIS FOOTBALL INSIDE OUT AND BACKWARDS. BUT THE WAY HE TAUGHT PEOPLE, THE WAY HE TAUGHT YOU ABOUT LIFE IS SOMETHING THAT YOU’LL NEVER, EVER, EVER BE ABLE TO FORGET. AND THOSE ARE LESSONS THAT A PERSON WILL TAKE TO THEIR GRAVE IN THE YEARS TO COME. THE MAN WAS JUST SO SPECIAL. ELI ON THE PHONE, ELI GOLD, THE VOICE OF THE ALABAMA CRIMSON TIDE. SO MANY MEMORIES. I DON’T WANT TO HAVE YOU GIVE US YOUR FAVORITE BECAUSE THAT’S PROBABLY HARD TO FIND. BUT THE THURSDAY NIGHTS WITH HIM, UH, DOING HIS WEEKLY COACH’S SHOW, WHAT WAS THAT FIRST INTERACTION? IAN WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER ABOUT THAT COMING OVER FROM THE DOLPHINS? HE’S ALREADY HAD A NATTY IN HIS POCKET. NOW HE COMES TO ALABAMA. WHAT WAS THAT REACTION OF YOU AND HIM? WELL, WE ALWAYS GOT ALONG VERY, VERY WELL. UH, SO SO THAT WAS GOOD. WE GOT ALONG VERY WELL AND IT DIDN’T BOTHER ME THAT HE WAS AN NFL COACH. I HAD SPENT A LOT OF TIME MYSELF AROUND THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE. BUT, YOU KNOW, YOU TREAT HIM WITH RESPECT AND AND OBVIOUSLY HIS TRACK RECORD PRECEDED HIM. HE’D ALREADY WON THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP AT LSU. SO I JUST KIND OF TOOK IT, YOU KNOW, SLOWLY A
