Gold Canyon Arts Council enriches AJUSD students with arts experiences

Students in all five schools of Apache Junction Unified School District have enjoyed enriching arts experiences thanks to a partnership with the Gold Canyon Arts Council.
The most recent example was when elementary school students from Peralta Trail Elementary School listened to The Fitzgeralds Family Ensemble, which performed a fiddle and dance concert on Feb. 24.
The GCAC is sponsoring all five schools to attend different fine arts experiences in Gold Canyon. In addition to the concerts, the organization has provided donations of guitars and lessons, visual arts instruction, as well as showcasing regional artists and local school talent at the Gold Canyon Arts Festival.
The mission of GCAC is to sponsor and promote performing, visual and other related arts activities in the greater Gold Canyon area through a series of culturally diverse public performances, festivals, educational residency programs, artistic awards and the encouragement of the arts in area schools.
“We truly appreciate all the support and expertise the GCAC provides for our students,” said Heather Wallace, AJUSD superintendent. “We are a small district with a limited budget and these experiences help broaden what we can provide for our students. And it’s more than just the joy it brings. Studies have shown that music and art enhance creativity and support the development of cognitive skills.”
AJUSD emphasizes a well-rounded education where academics, sports and extracurricular activities allow students to grow scholastically, physically and emotionally. Registration for all new students who wish to enroll in Apache Junction Unified School District schools are being accepted at all school locations.
