La Mirada holds its Polar Bear Plunge but not on New Year’s Day this year – Whittier Daily News

For the 14th year, La Mirada held its Polar Bear Plunge but this year there was one difference — it wasn’t on New Year’s Day.

Instead, it was held on Saturday, Dec. 18. But the principle remained the same. You went on a slide into an unheated pool during the chills of winter. Well, almost winter, anyway.

The city moved the date in an attempt to increase attendance, Oliver Osuna, director of community services, said.

However, for those seeking to warm up, there was recreational swimming in the heated 25-yard pool, and free hot cocoa.
