Steel Ball Run is finally here, and it arrives with the kind of swagger JoJo fans have been waiting years to see on screen. This is the seventh part of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, but it is also treated as the sixth anime season of the TV series. The story shifts into an alternate universe separated from the previous entries and drops us into 1890’s United States, where a giant 3700-mile horse race across the country is about to begin.
Instead of standing still and explaining itself in a dry way, the premiere throws you straight into the dust, noise, and ambition of the race. This gives the opener room to breathe while still feeling like a very fast first lap. Plus, the English dub cast for this series has voice actors like Damien Haas (Ne Zha 2), Frankie Kevich (Medalist), Jamieson Price (Vinland Saga), Cedric Williams (Hunter x Hunter), and Alejandro Antonio Ruiz (Tokyo Revengers), among others.
Episode 1, billed as “1st STAGE,” runs as a 47-minute special and premiered on Netflix on March 19, 2026.
Steel Ball Run Episode 1 Kicks Off the Race With $50M Prize
Steel Ball Run Episode 1’s biggest job is simple: make this wild race feel real. Steven Steel steps in as the promoter and announces the “Steel Ball Run.” It is a cross-country horse race from San Diego to New York with huge stakes and even bigger dreams attached to it. This is not just a race for speed. It is a race for money, freedom, pride, and survival.
The episode opens with an indigenous man (Sandman) running in a desert. Behind him, members of his own tribe give chase on horseback, condemning him for reading books written by “white men.” It is a tense, unsettling moment that quietly reflects the prejudice and rigid thinking of the 1890s. Yet, what stands out most is his incredible speed. He is so fast that even galloping horses struggle to keep up. The mysterious man escapes from the tribes people and arrives at the Steel Ball Race to participate and win $50 million.
The premiere focuses on Johnny Joestar, a former jockey who is now paralyzed from the waist down after getting shot by a stranger. The pilot episode also focuses on Gyro Zeppeli, a strange but magnetic outlaw who arrives with his “Steel Balls” at the Steel Ball Race and a confidence that is impossible to ignore. Johnny is drawn in by Gyro’s power and presence. But he is more intrigued by Gyro’s steel balls, which he keeps on his hip.
What works so well is how the premiere does not waste time pretending to be ordinary. Steel Ball Run has always been a story about motion, and episode 1 understands that from the start. It introduces the key players with just enough mystery to keep them interesting. Johnny and Gyro feel like the center of gravity, but the episode also places other names on the board, including Sandman, Lucy Steel, Diego Brando, Mountain Tim, Dot Han, Urmd Avdul, and Pocoloco.
Johnny, Gyro, And Sandman Make a Strong First Impression in Steel Ball Run

The heart of the episode is the relationship between Johnny and Gyro. Johnny comes in broken, frustrated, and stuck in a life that used to be golden. That instantly gives him emotional weight. He is not just a hero waiting for a cool power-up. He is someone who has lost the thing that once defined him. Gyro, on the other hand, walks in like a puzzle box with legs. He is charming, slightly dangerous, and full of confidence, but the episode also hints that he has his own reasons for entering the race.
The 47-minute runtime helps a lot here. Instead of rushing through introductions, the premiere uses its extra space to let the atmosphere settle in. According to JoJowiki, Steel Ball Run Episode 1 has the longest runtime in the franchise’s history. Several changes to the story could be seen in Episode 1. The participation fee in the race was $1200 in the manga, which was changed to $150 in the anime. Sandman’s sister was not present throughout the episode as well.
A release timeline for all the episodes hasn’t been announced yet. However, given that the anime debuted on Netflix exclusively on March 19, 2026, the streaming service would most likely follow a weekly release schedule. Episode 1 premiered on Thursday, which means that Episode 2 could be released on March 26, 2026.
Steel Ball Run is the kind of story that fans have been carrying in their heads for years, so the anime debut feels less like a normal release and more like a long-awaited gate finally swinging open. Even before the full season gets going, Episode 1 does its job well.
