In a groundbreaking development, AMNS India has etched its name as the first integrated steel producer in the nation to be green steel certified. Achieving this accolade signifies low carbon emissions during production, aligning with the Ministry of Steel’s green steel taxonomy introduced in December 2024.
The taxonomy benchmarks one tonne CO2 or less for optimum five-star rating. Meanwhile, AMNS India’s hot rolled products secured a four-star rating, and its cold rolled products received a three-star rating, according to CEO Dilip Oommen. This certification is set to aid various sectors by reducing scope 3 emissions.
The company, a collaboration between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, is steadfast in diminishing its carbon footprint, aiming for a 20% reduction by 2030 from the 2021 baseline. Their shift to a Direct Reduced Iron process using natural gas and ventures in renewable energy further highlight their commitment to environmental sustainability.
