Hyundai Steel has launched the full-scale production of its low-emission steel sheets, reducing the carbon emissions from its existing products by 20 percent.
“Based on our accumulated electric furnace operation know-how and blast furnace technology, Hyundai Steel became the world’s first company to operate a combined process that merges the molten iron from electric furnaces and blast furnaces to produce low-emission steel sheets,” said a Hyundai Steel representative.
Hyundai Steel has completed verification to ensure manufacturing safety and product competitiveness. Since April 2023, the company has been testing the production of low-emission steel sheets at the existing electric furnace facility at its Dangjin steel plant in South Chungcheong.
The company plans to expand its steel verification to 53 grades, which would add 28 to the already 25 certified products, which include two types of low-emission steel sheets.
Hyundai Steel’s move into full-scale production is particularly significant, as it plays a significant role in Hyundai Motor’s carbon dioxide reduction road map.
Hyundai Motor and Kia plan to begin the application of low-emission steel sheets to models produced both domestically and in Europe. Hyundai Steel is set to primarily supply low-emission steel sheets for automative steel and will gradually expand its use to broader areas.
In the mobility industry, the company is collaborating with global carmakers and auto parts companies. And in the energy sector, the company is eyeing the use of its low-emission steel for monopiles, commonly used in wind turbines.
Based on its practical achievements, the company is strengthening its market competitiveness through continued global verification and testing.
“We became the leading company to supply low-emission steel through our staggering combined process that merges electric furnace operation know-how and blast furnace technology,” the Hyundai Steel representative said. “We will actively support the shift to net-zero in in-demand industries, including the mobility and energy industries.”
