Amite handles De La Salle (Ken Trahan)

WESTWEGO – As a defending champion in the event and a championship state program, Amite is always a team to beat in the Allstate Sugar Bowl National Prep Classic.

Playing in the Girls Gold Bracket this year, the Lady Warriors look the part of a favorite this year.

Amite never trailed in a 58-30 victory over De La Salle Wednesday at the Alario Center.

Miracle Irving paced Amite with 16 points while Hai’ley Brumfield finished with 14 points, nine rebounds, four assists and four steals.

After being tied 4-4, Amite took the lead for good at 5-4 and closed the first quarter on a 9-0 run to take an 18-5 lead.

Amite maintained the edge in the second quarter before De La Salle closed the half on a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to 27-15 at halftime.

The Lady Warriors had runs of 7-0 and 9-0 in the third quarter to open up a 49-25 lead heading to the final quarter.

The Cavaliers committee 22 turnovers against the pressure of Amite.

Jaeden Brown led De La Salle with 11 points and six rebounds while Rae’l Simmons finished with seven points and five rebounds.

Amite (15-3) advances to face Northshore in the quarterfinals Thursday at 4 p.m.

The Lady Panthers downed Mount Carmel Academy 52-27.
