Country Day wins Jr. High title at ASBNPC

WESTWEGO – It was the first of its kind.

In the 11-year history of the Allstate Sugar Bowl National Prep Classic, the outstanding event added a junior high bracket for the first time this year.

It turned out to be well attended and the championship game turned out to be an outstanding contest.

Country Day rallied from an early deficit to take the lead late and held off John Curtis Christian 39-36 in the championship game Thursday afternoon at the Alario Center.

In a game that saw nine lead changes, the Cajuns took the lead for good with just under three minutes to play on a 3-pointer by Gaines Seaman to make it 36-34.

The Cajuns grew the lead to 39-34 before the Patriots cut the deficit to 39-36. Tory Walker got a contested look for the tying shot but could not connect and Country Day captured the title.

Logan Nelson was the Most Valuable Player, scoring 14 points with 10 rebounds for Country Day. Curtis McAllister finished with seven points, four rebounds and four steals and Chance Knight scored seven points.

John Curtis started the game in outstanding fashion, jumping out to a 7-0 lead behind Walker and Zyaire Shepherd, who scored eight points in the quarter. The Patriots carried a 15-10 lead to the second quarter.

Country Day went on a 6-0 run to take its first lead at 18-17 before the two teams ended up tied 22-22 at the half. Curtis led 34-30 heading to the fourth quarter.

Walker led John Curtis with 15 points and 10 rebounds while Shepherd finished with eight points and seven rebounds. Kash Ward had seven points and six rebounds.
