Sun-soaked reds to warm up with on a winter’s day

Staying in is the new going out (again), for now at least. The upside is the excellent excuse this provides to treat yourself to a winter warming red that you can get properly cosy with. A recent online tasting with fourth-generation Argentinean vintner Dr Laura Catena of Bodega Catena and their chief winemaker, Alejandro Vigil, reminded me of just how attractive a well-made Malbec from high-altitude Mendoza can be for midwinter drinking, bringing both intriguing nuance and rich comfort.

e were treated to a sample of the glorious Adrianna Mundus Bacillus Terrae 2018, a Malbec of great finesse and longevity. This flagship Malbec cru is a blend of some 200 micro-vinifications, all produced from just 1.4 hectares of calcium-rich vineyards at almost 1,500m above sea level in Uco Valley’s exciting Gualtallary subregion. It is one of very few new-world wines to be sold at the historic fine-wine marketplace that is La Place of Bordeaux, and a reminder that Argentinean Malbec can truly hold its own among the greats of the fine-wine world.
